How this site is built
No template, no site builder, no tracking. Here is openly what it is made of and how – as an example of how I build websites.
Ingredients
Written by hand
HTML, CSS and a little JavaScript, with no framework and no site builder. There is no build step: what is in the repository is exactly what gets served.
Light
The home page transfers about 95 KB on a first visit, roughly a third each for the font and the photo (as WebP). According to the HTTP Archive, an average website weighs more than 2 MB.
No cookies, no tracking
No analytics tools, no ad pixels and therefore no cookie banner. The fonts are served from this server instead of Google. The only external service is Formspree, which delivers messages from the contact form.
Only its own code
A Content Security Policy only allows scripts and styles from this domain. No third-party code runs here.
Works without JavaScript
Navigation, content and the contact form work without it. Only the live demo needs JavaScript, and it says so. Dark mode and reduced motion follow your device settings.
Checked on every change
Automatic checks run on every change: HTML validation, a check of all internal links, a render test in a real browser (phone and desktop, with and without JavaScript) and Lighthouse. If a score drops below 90, the check fails.
Graphics made of data and code
The cherry blossom is a scatter plot of 409 points, the hedgehog an SVG path, and the model of the bread roll forecast trains right in your browser.
The neural network
The loop on the home page is rendered in Blender: a forward pass through 71 neurons and 266 connections, 8 seconds long. It only loads once it is in view, pauses when it scrolls out of view or the tab is in the background, and can be stopped with a button. With reduced motion and in data-saver mode it stays a still image.
Hosted on GitHub Pages
TLS-encrypted and published automatically from the Git repository. For rebuilds there is a real maintenance mode that does not serve the pages at all.
Built with AI – said openly
For coding, testing and wording I work with AI assistants such as Claude. I do not hide that, because it is exactly what I work with in the AI team, too. The ideas, content and decisions are mine, and everything goes through the same automatic checks as any other change.
